Synopsis
Based upon a Thomas Hardy short story and set in the early nineteenth century when England is at war with Napoleon, this is the story of a forbidden romance between Malthus Singer (Jean-Marc Barr – Breaking the Waves), a Kings German Legion Hussar and Frances Groves (Emma Fielding), the daughter of a west country solicitor. Malthus yearns for his homeland and Frances is trapped in an undesirable engagement with her father’s business partner (John Sessions). Illicit meetings between Malthus and Frances soon spark a passionate affair. If the affair is discovered Frances will be branded a soldiers whore and Mathus will be a disgrace to his regiment. Captain Fairfax (Simon Callow), Mathus’ commanding officer, is extremely vigilant of such indiscretions. Can the couple keep the affair secret? Will Malthus ever see his homeland again? A timeless and touching romance filmed along the beautiful Dorset coast with stunning photography and heartfelt performances.
